A time to reflect
As an entrepreneur, it can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind and forget to take a step back and reflect on your journey. Taking time to look back, retrospect and reflect to take some time to reflect on your successes and challenges, and to think about what you’ve learned along the way.
What is a Retrospective?
A Retrospective is a structured process that allows entrepreneurs to reflect on their journey, identify lessons learned, ready to set better goals for the future. It is typically conducted at regular intervals (e.g. monthly, quarterly, annually) and can be done individually or as part of a team.
Why are they important?
Retrospectives are important because they allow entrepreneurs to:

In order to succeed, entrepreneurs need to be able to get input from others, analyze that input, and make changes based on that analysis. That’s why it’s so important for entrepreneurs to get feedback from others – it allows them to improve their business skills and increase their chances of success.
Celebrate their successes
It can be easy to focus on the challenges faced by entrepreneurs, but it’s important to also celebrate their successes! A Retrospective can help with this by providing a space to reflect on all that has been accomplished.
How to conduct a Retrospective?
There are many different ways to conduct a Retrospective, but there are some common elements that should be included:
Set aside time
Make sure you set aside enough time so that you can really reflect on your journey without feeling rushed. An hour or two should suffice, but it may take longer if you’re doing it as part of a team.
Choose a format
Will you be doing it individually or as part of a team? If you’re doing it as part of a team, will you be conducting it in-person or virtually? There is no right or wrong answer here, so choose whichever format will work best for you and your team.
1. The “Good, Bad, and Ugly”
In this format, team members take turns sharing something that went well during the sprint, something that didn’t go well, and something that they thought was ugly (i.e., could be improved). This format is a good way to surface both positive and negative feedback in a balanced way.
2. The “Start, Stop, Continue”
In this format, team members share something that they want to start doing, something that they want to stop doing, and something that they want to continue doing. This format is a good way to focus on actions that the team can take in the future to improve their work.
3. The “4 L’s”
In this format, team members share something that they Learned during the sprint, something that they Liked about the sprint, something that they Lacked during the sprint, and something that they Longed for during the sprint. This format is a good way to get feedback on both the positive and negative aspects of the sprint.
4. The “Glad, Mad, Sad”
In this format, team members share something that made them glad during the sprint, something that made them mad during the sprint, and something that made them sad during the sprint. This format is a good way to get feedback on both the positive and negative emotions that team members experienced during the sprint.
5. The “What Went Well/What Didn’t Go Well”
In this format, team members share what went well and what didn’t go well during the sprint. This format is a good way to get balanced feedback on both the positive and negative aspects of the sprint.
Reflect on your journey
This is the heart of the exercise, so take your time and really think about your successes and challenges over the past period of time. What did you learn? What would you do differently if you had the chance? What are you most proud of?
Identify adjustments for the future
Once you’ve reflected on your journey, use what you’ve learned to make adjustments for the future.
- How are you going to take what you learned into the next period of time?
- What changes do you want to make?
- What do you want to continue doing that has been working well?
It is important for entrepreneurs to learn from their mistakes so that they can improve their business. By learning from your mistakes, you are able to identify the areas where you need to make changes and focus on what needs to be done in order to be successful. Additionally, learning from your mistakes allows you to avoid making the same mistake again in the future. In order to continue growing and being successful as an entrepreneur, it is important to set better goals for the future and improve your business skills. Getting feedback from others is also essential for entrepreneurs – it allows them to improve their skills and increase their chances of success. Finally, it is important for entrepreneurs to celebrate their successes! A Retrospective can help with this by providing a space to reflect on all that has been accomplished.
