Living your best life

I subscribe to dictionary.com’s word of the day. A while back the word was ‘arete’ – but I like the wikipedia definition – ‘Arete … is a concept in ancient Greek thought that, in its most basic sense, refers to ‘excellence’ of any kind—especially a person or thing’s “full realization of potential or inherent function.”’
It has no direct correspondence in English, but is generally thought to be an aggregate of characteristics that make up virtue, excellence. This word is key in work of Aristotle and related to the idea of eudaemonia which is flourishing and happiness from a life lived WELL. Arete are the qualities that express the BEST version of yourself that leads to a full and happy life.
We all recognise the contentment that comes when we are playing at our best, bringing our A-Games, and we can recognise that in others. There is an allure and attractiveness to someone who is living up to their potential.
It’s the gap between what we are actually doing and our best potential that can bring regret and discontent.
But arete is not the same for everyone as our cocktail of best qualities is different to everyone else. Self-awareness – “Know thyself” – is how we can start to build a picture of what our individual A-Game is. So today, spend a bit of time with yourself. Where are you in terms of eudaemonia – a life lived well? Are you bringing your A-Game? And if not what would it take?
