You may have heard the phrase, “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.”
This is often used to judge groups like Masterminds. But here are a few reasons why I believe this should be challenged.
Opportunity to Teach
Teaching others enhances your skills. Through teaching and coaching others you can hone your ability to communicate clearly and accurately
Developing Emotional Intelligence
By supporting those who are not quite as experienced or knowledgeable as you can help you develop communication skills, patience and empathy.
Diversity
Experience and intelligence are multi-dimensional. Just because you are more skilled in one area, it doesn’t mean you are more experienced in all skills. You can still learn other skills from the other members of the group.
Challenges Assumptions
Less experienced members may challenge some of your assumptions when understanding your expertise. This can either strengthen or challenge your existing understanding.
Encourages Group Growth
Your extra experience raises the level of the others within the group and raises the WHOLE group … including you.
Leadership opportunities
With your extra expertise and understanding, you can show leadership by supporting the growth of the other group members.
So, if you do find yourself in a group where you appear to be the most experienced or expert, don’t just leave. Try to see if you can use that to grow yourself and the others in the group.
